Samsonite OC2LITE Review

Introduction, Why Choosing the Right Suitcase Matters

So today I'll be reviewing the Samsonite OC2LITE, and I picked this suitcase because it's important to have a strong suitcase when travelling abroad. The kind of person this suitcase is aimed at is probably families going on holidays, though there are options for business travellers too.

I'm specifically reviewing the 81cm Samsonite OC2LITE, and my first impression is that this is a very spacious suitcase, but I'll be going into more depth below. This Samsonite OC2LITE review will cover all the essential features you need to know. For more comprehensive suitcase reviews, check out our suitcase review homepage.

First Impressions and Unboxing

My first impressions: this is a very large suitcase and it looks streamlined and specifically pleasing. It feels very premium. It's very sturdy and also very lightweight. Samsonite was clearly trying to build a suitcase that was lightweight yet strong.

On first inspection, the zippers were very strong and didn't feel flimsy. It has four wheels, each with two smaller wheels, so eight wheels in total, and it has a nice flush finish to it.

Design and Build Quality

Materials and Durability

The suitcase is made from polypropylene, a strong and lightweight material. There are sturdier materials, such as polycarbonate, which is quite resistant to scratches, but polypropylene has the advantage of being lighter.

Overall, it feels tough and well built, and you can hear just how strong it is if you give it a knock. Based on my experience with this Samsonite OC2LITE review, the build quality exceeds expectations. Aesthetic and Style Options

In terms of the colours that are available, they have navy blue, lemonade, spearmint, black, and hunter green. The look is quite sleek, and the smaller OC2LITE models, such as the 55cm carry-on, would appeal more to business travellers, whereas the larger ones would appeal more to families. For more options, see our review of the best carry-on suitcases available.

Size, Capacity, and Organisation

Dimensions and Expandability

Did I mention that it's expandable? For the 81cm version, the capacity is 127L. There's also another zip you can pull to make it expandable, giving you another 14L of space. The dimensions are 81cm x 54cm x 35cm, and you'll be able to fit quite a lot into it.

Samsonite OC2LITE review of Internal Layout and Compartments

The interior is divided into two completely open sides.

The left side has a zipper so you can zip that whole compartment up. Inside that section, there's another smaller zippered area that's perfect for socks and underwear, and another zippered pocket in the centre for smaller items.

The right side is completely open, but you can use the straps inside to tie everything down.

Because it opens fully on both sides, packing and organising clothes is much easier. This design is intentional, it's meant to be completely folded out when you get to your hotel.

A small downside is that there aren't more zippers or compartments, and a mesh cover on the left-hand side would have been a nice touch so you could see into your clothes. But that's just a personal preference. Overall, in this Samsonite OC2LITE review, the internal organization works well for most travelers.

Portability and Ease of Use

Wheels and Manoeuvrability

As I mentioned, it has eight wheels in total, and because of this, it's quite smooth to roll. Another advantage is that if one wheel goes, you've still got seven more left.

I've had experiences with other suitcases with only four wheels, and losing one wheel made it very difficult to move. However, because these are smaller wheels, it can be a little bit difficult on cobblestones. On smooth surfaces like airport floors, though, it's absolutely perfect.

Handle and Grip Comfort

The handle is durable and telescopic, and because of the eight wheels, it's quite easy to pull. Pro tip: I always recommend using all the wheels rather than putting all the pressure on just the two front wheels.

It also has a side handle, which is handy when lifting it into a car boot or onto a conveyor belt.

Security and Travel Features

Locks and Safety

It has a TSA lock built in, which means security can open your suitcase without damaging it. There's a three-digit pin to get into the suitcase.

The polypropylene shell is quite tough, and it feels like it can withstand knocks and bumps during travel.

Weight and Airline Compatibility

The suitcase weighs only 4.55kg, and most airlines, if you're travelling internationally, give you up to 30kg for checked luggage. That means you've got about 25kg to work with, which is quite a lot, ideal if you're heading to and plan to bring back plenty of souvenirs. This weight advantage is one of the key benefits highlighted in any thorough Samsonite OC2LITE review.

Real-World Performance

Airport and Travel Test

During travel, the suitcase performed well. It had a few minor scratches, but that's much better than a canvas suitcase that might tear or stain.

On good terrain, it's easy to manoeuvre and swivels really well, making airport navigation a breeze.

Value for Money

Price vs Quality

In terms of the price, it is on the higher end, but I think the fact that it's strong and very lightweight makes it worth the investment. Samsonite makes some really good suitcases, and this one feels built to last.

It also comes with a 10-year global warranty, which guarantees against manufacturing defects and workmanship. Always double-check the details of what's covered. Samsonite also carries out extensive quality testing, such as tumble tests, drop tests, zipper tests, and wheel tests, so they really do thorough checks before sending their products to market. Who Should Buy the Samsonite OC2LITE?

As I said, I was reviewing the larger 81cm model, which is really good for families and longer trips.

However, if you're travelling for business or shorter trips, the smaller 55cm version might be a better choice. For help choosing the right size, check out our suitcase sizes chart guide.

Final Verdict, Should You Buy It?
